SPCH 5000 Blog post 15

To conclude my experience with SPCH 5000, I can honesty say that this is one of the best classes that I have ever taken here at Utah State. Not only did I learn so many great things about women's rights and the different gender issues that so many individuals face on a daily basis, but I applied many of these experiences to my every day life as well. Its not easy being an individual among the many that make up our world and the society in which we live in. Every day we are surrounded by people that judge us and the media that tells us to act and look a certain way. See in the end being yourself and going against what our society states as "socially correct" is what will set you a part from all the rest.  I loved every once of this class and cant wait to take another one like it.

SPCH 5000 blog post #14

What I loved about the Epilogue at the end of the chapter, was the comment that Taft made. I believe that if both men and women worked together for the different rights and movements that they are fighting for, our nation would be a whole lot stronger. I don't think that men and women should stand alone, because together we could accomplish so much more. I believe that women are a huge part of a mans life just as a man is a huge part of a women s life. If both men and women backed each other up, their voices together would be unstoppable. Taft mentions that if we just talked more and combined forces to work with change, just think of the possibilities that would come about. Gendered lives was such an amazing book, that I believe everyone should get the chance to experience. Although it is going to take time for our world to completely change, it the steps in between the process which matters the most. Women's rights and mens rights are going to make a huge impact on our lives, and I cant wait for that day to come! Well I would love to hear everyone's input on this cause!

SPCH 5000 Blog post #13

Chapter 12 was probably the most interesting chapter that stood out out to me through the entire book. I think the thing that I kept reading over and over again was the story that Brice shared in the book. Its sad hearing about something so painful, such as a father beating a mother. Being a young child and having to grow up with that, it would hard to deal with and it would be hard to overcome as well. Brice said that he never wanted to end up like his father and that he would never treat a women like the way his father treated his mom. But eventually he did show signs of his father and he didn't understand why. I believe that when you are such a young child and you grow up  seeing things such as Brice did, it would be very difficult to not end up the same way, because that is all you know. I do think that their is therapy out their that could help someone going through this obstacle and I do believe that you can change and that you don't need to be just like the "idol-figure" that you looked up to your entire life. Being able to cope with something as powerful as this, isn't something that would be easy to do alone. Knowing that their are people that are willing to help you and that their are people that love you is something that these individuals need to understand. But I truly did love this chapter and I would love to hear anyone elses thoughts on the situation.

The most interesting thing that I found in Chapter 11 was the example that Regina uses when she is referring to a commercial AD on the television. I completely agree with Regina when she says that she gets upset at the commercials that show women jumping up and down, looking completely stupid when they are cleaning the house. Lets be real, nobody likes to clean the house in the first place, and no mom with a family looks like that when she is vacuuming. I know that when I am at home in California and my mom is cleaning house, its best to just stay away. That might sound a little weird, but really who wants to be bugged when they are trying to get things done? I know I don't. But I do believe that they shouldn't have commercials like these, and if they do they shouldn't resemble a women in that way. But those are my thoughts on the chapter, I would love to hear everybody elses thoughts.

SPCH 5000: Blog Post 11

Gender roles and gender characteristics is a very interesting topic to discuss. Not only do many individuals within the media world consum these characteristics and portray them in their everyday lives, but it is something that makes the media stand out above all the rest. Characters in movies are told to play roles of people that they may not relate to at all, but they take on the roles and play them to the best of their abilities. Watching all the different movies and television shows that are being played around the world and seeing the individuals taking on the different gender roles, is what makes these shows and movies so great. But that is my opinion on the gender role situations!

SPCH 5000: Blog Post 10

Something that I would like to share from this weeks lesson, is the separation between gender in schools. I personally don't believe that boys should be in one classroom and girls should be in another separate from them. I believe that at a young age, both genders being able to participate together is a good thing. Eventually in their life they are going to have to work with one another, live with one another and so on. I'm not saying that sometimes children don't pick on each other based on their gender types, but honestly its a way of life. Children, both boys and girls, will learn at a young age how to deal with one another and that is why I believe that their should never be separation between gender in schools! Well that is just my opinion on the situation, I would love to hear others opinions as well!

Something that I want to share about last weeks lesson, is an experience that I personally had. We were in the airport in California when a man walked over to my team, and asked, "what sport do you play?" I then replied we play softball for Utah State. He then came back with a response, "So softball players don't work as hard as baseball players do right, like its not as competitive?" Although I had to hold my tongue back from making a response that wouldn't of gone so well, I answered "actually, our sport is harder," and walked away. Although baseball is just as competitive as softball, I wanted to put this guy in a place of discomfort for putting down women the way that he did. Its so interesting to me how many individuals their are out there that truly don't understand women and all that they do is this world. So that was my experience that I thought you would all like to hear, hope you enjoy!

SPCH 5000 Blog Post #8

The thing that I found most interesting about this chapter was the stories about girls not being able to play a so called "boys sport." To me this not only is discriminating against women and girls, but its not right to be able to have that power to not let an individual be able to play what they want to play. If a girl wants to play football or baseball, let her play. What is it hurting? Is it because a man cant handle a girl being better then him? I think that this world needs to get over the fact that a man is not better then a woman! They arnt stronger, they arnt smarter and they arnt better at sports, plain and simple. This is my opinion on the situation, I would love to hear other opinions as well. :)

SPCH 5000 Blog # 7

Something that I thought was very interesting this week, was watching the short films of the office. Its amazing how much gender examples that you can pinpoint throughout the entire show and then compare them to the ones seen in the book. Another thing that I really enjoyed learning about this week, was the comparisons on how a man and a women "should act." Many individuals see women as having to always look their best, to put on make up each and every day and to act like a lady. I used the example in class that I am a softball player at Utah State, and with our schedules of being up at 5 am each and everyday, getting ready for school isnt something that we care to do all the time. That doesnt mean we look like men and that doesnt mean we are not considered women or ladies, just based on our choice of clothing For games we get all dolled up. We wear makeup and do our hair and yet we are still "ball players." You shouldnt have to label someone to act and look a certain way, cause at the end of the day its your choice and your life. But I truely did enjoy this lesson this week!

SPCH 5000: Blog post # 6

The main topic that I wanted to talk about this week, is from the short comedy The Office. It was interesting to see how many gender differences were seen throughout the clip, and how many individuals didn't care about the words they were using towards others or how they were placing people in certain categories. Somthing that really stuck out to me, is when they were comparing the two women. The men in the office clearly saw as an atractive woman and the other not so much. They didnt care about the words they were using or about the feelings that might be hurt, they just bluntly said what they felt and left it at that. In todays societly things like this happen all the time, its just wether or not we take the time to see it. Not only did I enjoy the film, but it was definitly helpful to see these gender differences that were shown throughout it as well.

SPCH 5000: Blog 5

After reading the chapter for this week and discussing the different topics in class, I think that the most interesting thing to me that stood out would have to be the two ads that we went over. My favorite AD out of the two that we discussed was the Pamala Anderson AD that was related to " don't eat meat, be a vegetarian." When we broke into groups and went over what exactly this AD was trying to tell us, we simply just said that it can be broken up into many different ways. One way that we choose to take was that it could be telling people, mainly men, to not treat women like a piece of meat and that they are more then just a nice figure. I honestly just loved the conversations that we had about this AD and found it quite amusing as well. But yes that is my blog for the week! Hope you enjoy!

SPCH 5000 Blog: 4

After reading chapter 3, the one topic that I truly found the most interesting was the National Organization for Women, also known as (NOW). Not only was this powerful movement established in the 60's, but it demonstrated that women, no matter what their ethnicity, should have all the rights that men have. To me, this is a very powerful message that had a huge impact not only for all the women that participated back in the 60's, but for the women today as well. They created something that would change the lives for many individuals around the world, and although we still today struggle with "women's rights", it was a beginning mark that made a difference and a mark that nobody would forget. Not only do I believe that NOW is a program that all women should take the time to explore, but is a program that has made so many accomplishments along the way that are absolutely amazing. This is my opinion on the NOW program, I would love to hear from anyone else who has thoughts/opinions on this matter.

SPCH 5000: BLOG 3

The main point that I want to reflect upon in chapter two, is what it means to be looked upon as a different gender( a boy or girl) compared to being viewed as an individual. Being a women in the United States, I have been influenced(whether that be by the media, my family, my peers, or just past history) to see the world as a mans world and that women have these certain roles that they should follow or abide by. In reality, the world has changed and women are riding up the totem pole. I believe that women should have just the same amount of equal rights compared to those of a man. Their was a story in this chapter about a lady, that as a young girl wanted to play football and yet because she was a girl and not a boy, she didn't get that chance. To me, this is unbelievable and not right. Women should have every right to play a mans sport if they choose to make that decision. We are all individuals with goals and the passion to make a difference in this world, if we continue to be treated differently then men, then this world will never grow and this world will never change.

SPCH 5000: Blog #2

This week we had some very interesting topics about what it means to be a feminist and how many women don't place themselves under that category. Its hard for me to believe that so many women out their don't define themselves as a feminist and would much rather not discuss this very important topic. Feminism defends the rights of women that are equal to those of a man, and to be a woman and not support those rights is unbelievable to me. Woman should have just the same amount of rights as a man does, no matter what. I do believe though on the other hand, that a women shouldn't be on the front line. Their are many other jobs that a woman can do in the military that would be more helpful than to place them on the front line. That is my view about feminism and I do believe that more women out their need to step up and defend their own rights.

Media Smarts JCOM 2010: Blog 1

Hi my name is Kali Cancelosi and I am a Junior here at Utah State University. I am currently majoring in Speech Communication and minoring in JCOM. My email is kali.cancelosi@aggiemail.usu.edu and my phone number I will send by email. Here is a current picture of myself:

When I am not going to school, my main hobby is playing softball. I have been playing the game of softball since I was four years old. I am on the softball team here at Utah State! Their is nothing that I would rather be doing, then being out on that ball field. Some other hobbies include : singing and watching Criminal Minds with my teammates. I absolutely love Country music and I love to sing loud in the shower! I am from Southern California where the weather is warm and their are beaches in every direction. Logan Utah has definitely been a change for myself, but I have loved and enjoyed every minute of it. Some of the different types of media that I use for catching up on the news in our world would most likely be my phone or the television. I am constantly on my phone looking up things whenever I get the chance. Me and google are definitely best friends! Media plays a big part in our lives and surrounds us each and every day. I think sometimes we don't realize how much we can get caught up in the media or how much information that we can get from it! I am so excited for this class and cant wait to get more educated about the Media!

SPCH 5000 blog:Introduction 1

My name is Kali Cancelosi and I am a junior here at Utah state. I am originally from California and I have honestly enjoyed the change of living here in Logan, Utah. One of my hobbies that I have had since the age of four, is playing the game of softball. I am on the softball team here at Utah State and absolutely love it. My Major is Speech Communications and I am minoring in JCOM. I have enjoyed each and every class within these majors and have gained a great knowledge that comes along with them as well. My teachers within the fields of both Communication and JCOM have been amazing and I am honestly very excited for this Gender and Communication class. I am truly interested in the communication between males and females and how they differ as well. I hope to gain information on these different communication styles and how they use them to their advantage. All in all I am very excited for this class and I cant wait to get started with it!
Some things that I find interesting about the introduction of this book, is how it gives insight about the authors personal views and her very own life. I also appreciate the fact that this author tells us through the introduction that we are going to gain a great knowledge about gender and with that it will show the different ways in which being a man and or woman in this world has it advantages and disadvantages. I am excited to get into the rest of this book!
